Interview with Saskia Juliette

November 05, 2013

Hello, can you tell us a little bit about your life? What do you do these days? Hi! I am currently studying Interaction Design at the School of the Arts in Utrecht (the Netherlands) specializing in Toy & Theme park design. All my free time goes to illustration, games and travelling to gain new insights and inspiration.

Do you create designs on a regular basis? I try to make one illustration every week to escape from the busy student life. It clears my head and helps me relax. It’s a blessing and a curse at the same time because I have a constant need to draw the stuff that comes into my head.

What are some techniques you use to create your artworks? I start off by sketching with a pencil, after that I do the final linework and detailing with my Copic multiliners and markers.

How long have you been designing? I’ve been drawing stuff for as long as I can remember. The first real ‘design’ I’ve ever made was at the age of 4. I was staying in a nice forest bungalow with my parents and there were a lot of birdhouses in the trees. The owner would fill the little bowls in the houses with birdfeed and the birds would come, eat, leave and return again later. I made a drawing of a small bag that could fit on the birds so they could take the food with them.

Do you have a favourite artist? I keep a list of artists that inspire me, my favourites change regularly. At the moment I am very into: Pyhai, Florian Meacci, Brian M. Viveros and Murder and Rose (by Asmahan Mosleh).

What kind of music do you listen to? I have a very broad taste in music. It really depends on the moment. Overall I am a big fan of IDM but just like the artists my favourite songs change every day. The music that is currently giving me eargasms are: A Perfect Circle, Deftones, Throwing Snow, Groundislava and Hauk ‘n Baum.

Tell us what would be your dream project. I would love to build my own themepark within the style of my illustrations. Creating my own dream world wherein I could invite others to visit.
