What makes Amanda Mallardo so Unique?

October 23, 2013

Hi Amanda, Tell us a little about yourself.

I'm originally from Kenosha, Wisconsin - a smaller city between Milwaukee and Chicago. It's right on the lake and has a really cool lighthouse, the Renaissance Faire, Mars Cheese Castle, and a bunch of 50s style diners and drive-inns. I thought it was the worst place ever when I was younger and worked my whole childhood to get out of there, but now ended up in a much more boring suburb of Chicago and have a new appreciation for it and its quirkiness.

I started skateboarding when I was 11 and been doing it ever since. My husband skateboards as well and builds skateparks. I have a daughter who's almost 2. She's been keeping me busy most my days lately.

Art and design has always been a part of my life and I got a degree in graphic design. Currently I'm a UX Designer/Creative Coder at my day job, and work on my illustrations at night when the little one goes to bed.

What kind of design inspires you to work?

I'm inspired by a lot of things, but I always seem to go back to old skateboard graphics from the 80's - especially Jim Phillips' stuff. I like drawing drippy things, skulls, bugs, animals. I like the 80's punk color palette.

Do you have any particular hobbies?   What do you do when you are not making art?

Currently, taking care of my 2 year old. I try to skate when I can, and snowboard in the winter, and surf occasionally when there's waves on Lake Michigan.

What would be your dream contract?

It's my goal in life to get some art on a snowboard. Capita Snowboards would be sick. They have the best graphics.

Other than that, I basically love any kind of product graphics- like helmets or bindings would be awesome as well. Or a boat! I've seen some wakeboard boats with some insane illustrations on them.

Do you have any other artistic skills?

I probably know enough guitar to play in a punk band...

What are you working on these days?

Besides building demo's for the CES trade show at the day job, I've got a couple side projects going on including a collab with illustrator, Book Williams Jr., and a skateboard graphic for a local shop around here.

Who are your favorite artists?

Hydro74, Joshua Davis, Hannah Stouffer, Jeremy Fish, Michael Sieben ... a bunch more I can't think of right now...
