Interview with Laura Guardalabene

October 18, 2013

What kind of words would you use to describe yourself?

passionate, loving, forgetful, artistic, detail oriented, a little crazy

Do you draw regularly?

YES

What are some of your inspirations?

I'm heavily inspired by nature (butterflies, flowers and insects have some of the best color pallets and patterns to pull from), science, fashion, movies & TV shows, old run-down Americana landscapes (vintage signs are the best!), interior design architecture and music.

Are you currently living from your art?

Sort of. I work full-time at an advertising agency but most of the time I'm not doing as creative/illustrative work as I find myself doing outside of work.

What advices could you give to aspiring designers?

NEVER stop creating, if you get discouraged (and you will) keep your chin up and remember that you are unique and have something to show the world, always sketch, take pictures and observe, let the world around you inspire you.

Have you ever designed a t-shirt before?

Yes! Lots. My first job when I was 16 was for a local screen printing company where I designed tons of shirts, mostly athletic and club related t-shirts for schools.

What kind of music do you listen when you create?

That sort of depends on my mood and what I'm creating. If I'm making a bright colorful piece, I like to listen to bright, energetic and poppy music like Anamanaguchi or The Go! Team. If I'm working on a more serious piece I'll listen too "moodier" stuff like Alt-J or Grizzly Bear... Then there's times where I just like to blast stuff from youth like TLC, Snoop Dogg & Ace of Base.
