Interview with Eric Fan!

Tell us about your collaborations with other artists

I've collaborated successfully with a few different artists over the years, including my brother Terry who is also an artist. We had a few prints together on Threadless, including a design called Autumn Chameleons that was based on an idea my six-year-old nephew had. Terry and I share a similar style so collaborating with him has always been an easy process. The challenge of working with an artist with a vastly different style is finding a way to bring harmony and cohesion between the two styles without one style overwhelming the other.

How long have you been designing for t-shirts

I started designing t-shirts about six years ago. By chance I saw an article about crowd sourcing and online t-shirt sites and decided to give it a go.

You must certainly have way too much tees at home, which one are your favs?

I have a crazy amount of t-shirts, but it's hard to pick favourites. A recent favourite is an Arcade Fire shirt called The Half Light designed by Steven James Boyd. I just love the wistful mood of it and I'm also a fan of the group. Another favourite is a design called Captured Nostalgia by Charlemphol Harnchakkham, aka huebucket. I love his style and the retro elements appeal to me.

Which design are you really proud of?

I'm proud of The Helium Menagerie, only because it was the first t-shirt design I ever sold, which was the boost I needed to continue designing tees. I also drew it with a broken finger, so for me it always reminds me that to succeed you sometimes have to struggle past some seemingly insurmountable hurdles.

What would you do if I gave you a million dollars?

I should probably answer with something flippant and funny, but the truth is I would probably invest a good portion of it, share the rest with family and friends, maybe fly to Paris and try to live there as an expatriate.

What do you do on week-ends?

I draw, mostly. It's the only time I have to devote towards art because I work full time .

Which artists do you really get inspiration from?

My brother Terry, my friend Garima, and countless other artists and illustrators. I've always been a huge fan of Maurice Sendak, and I still draw inspiration from his imaginative work.

Name a couple of things you do everyday?

I try my hardest to draw everyday, but sometimes I don't have the energy. Same goes for exercise. :P

Talk about a dream you made recently?

I guess my Made store on Threadless. It's the only time I've had complete control of what went into it, which was always a dream of mine.

Have you ever came to Montreal? Would you like too?

I love Montreal. It's one of my favourite cities and I've visited many times. I even tried to learn French at one point because I thought it would be cool to live in Montreal for a while. I like the European atmosphere and the cultural vibrancy of the city. It's unlike any other city in Canada.
